“Major Barriers to Church Growth and Development “

Acts 13:6-12

Barriers are obstacles, hindrances, obstructions and termites that eat away at the spiritual health of local churches. They are our Doings of the church. They are the way modern pastors and preachers have chosen to do, handle, lead and run their local churches, which have invariably brought various kinds of sicknesses and diseases to the body of Christ today.

1. Scandalous Pastors:

Ignorant, incompetent, immoral, stagnant, unavailable and thieving pastors have ruined and continued to ruin the viability of local churches.

2. Constant Change of Pastors:

Constant, shopping and transfereing of pastors have brought malfunctioning to many local churches.

3. Power Brokers In Control:

The usurpation of authority by Deacons, Elders, Boards, Trustees, Committees and Associates diminishes health of local churches.

4. Deviation Into Errors and Abuses:

Moving away gradually from the centrality of Christ, the whole truth of His word into esoteric doctrines and practices will destroy the vitality of the local church.

5. Lifeless Pulpit:

Once the pulpit has lost the fire of the Holy Spirit, becomes compromised, powerless, hates the whole truth of the Bible, then the church will gradually go down.

6. Administrative Lapses:

Improper, wicked, unjust, worldly and carnal administrative policies will bring the church down sooner or later.

7. Spiritual Warfare:

Local churches that fail to practice warfare will have to contend with witchcraft manipulations, deceptions, infiltrations and wrecking of havocs in the church.

8. Grieving The Holy Spirit:

Disobedience, condoning sins, and evils are ways we quench, grieve and fight against the Holy Spirit of God. Without the presence of the Holy Spirit, demons will have a swell time destroying people.

9. Internal Wranglings:

Polluted atmosphere, political manourvers and carnal jealousies, envies and bickering will always lead any church down. Churches die from inside through infighting and crisis.

10. Power Groups:

In local churches where one family, money-bags, double-faced associates, ministry militia, witchcraft warriors, traditional groups, women power and foundation members operate, don’t expect any form of spiritual health there.

11. Bad Image:

Any church that oozes out negative image, smell and smoke as a result of happenings and occurrences inside her will surely repel, rather than attract people. Her health will be greatly jeopardized.

12. Inward Focused:

Local churches that only focus on themselves, engage in celebrations, fun and having nice time without consciously reaching out to her communities will start going down gradually.

13. Ageing Membership:

Local churches that have much more members in their 50s and 60s than people in their 20s and 30s cannot be healthy for impact. When majority of her leaders are in their 70’s than young people in their 30s and 40s, then spiritual diseases will settle in.

14. Untrained and Stagnant Workers:

Local churches that refuse to train, equip, empower and enable people to use their gifts and graces for ministry within and without the local church will find vitality very difficult.

15. Resisting Worthwhile Change:

Local churches that refused to change archaic methods, ideas, systems and policies will stop growing and start greying. Refusal to change what has outlived its usefulness will ruin the health of local churches.

As long as we practice or allow any of these barriers, our local churches cannot regain their spiritual and scriptural health. Every Pastor and church leader must work to remove these barriers to church health.

1. Seek to understand the Being and Doing of the church.

2. Seek to do church in scriptural and balanced ways.

3. Have courage to identify the particular barriers to your church’s health.

4. Have the determination to remove them strategically.

5. Seek God for grace, capacity and leadership to lead a healthy local church.

May you receive the grace to grow healthy, Jesus-centered and devil-defying churches, in Jesus name.
