“THE WORK OF THE CHURCH”
The Bible teaches specifically what God wants the church to do; that no man has the right to try to broaden or add to these God-given duties.
Look at Eph. 4:11-12. Paul speaks of the different offices in the New Testament church: apostle, prophets, bishops and teachers. He then tells why these offices were instituted in the church – for the perfecting of the saints. This is wanting the church is to do.
What does it mean “to perfecting of the saints?” It simply means that the members of the Lord’s body are to be taught and trained to live in the service of God.
The second reason given in Ephesians the fourth chapter for the organization of the local church is: for “the work of the ministry.” In other words, another duty of the church is to care for the poor.
The third reason is: for the “edifying” (or building up of) “the body of Christ.” This simply means that the church is to see that the gospel is preached so that the people can believe, repent, be baptized and be added to the Lord’s body. What are the three work of the church? The perfecting of the saints, the work of the ministry, and the preaching of the gospel. These are the things that God told the local church to do.
The local church which God devised as a working unit is completely sufficient to do everything God said for it to do. Some of the brethren today are taking the embarrassment and erroneous position that the divine institution, the church of the Lord, is an inadequate institution. The Bible says in Eph. 1:22-23 that the church is the fullness of Christ. Paul did not say that the church partially filled the body of Christ but that the church was the “fullness of Christ.” That means that the church is completely built and constructed by God and that it does everything that God gave it to do. When a man says that the church is insufficient to perform the work of God has given it to do, he is on dangerous ground.
In Acts 20:28, Paul told the elders at Ephesus to feed the flock of God which was among them. Now did these brethren build a college to accomplish that work? When God told those elders to feed the flock of God among them, he means the church could and should do that work. God blesses!
